Surprise!

One afternoon back in April, about an hour before Derek got home from work I had this thought pop into my mind: “I should go take a pregnancy test.”  I was kind of surprised at myself and just laughed it off.  I had been super tired all week but I really didn’t think I was pregnant again already.  Isaac wasn’t even 5 months old yet.  I again had a stronger feeling that I should go take a pregnancy test.  So I did.  And it was positive.  After staring at it for a few minutes, I packed Isaac up in the car, drove to Walmart and bought another one.  It too was positive.  I could not believe it.  I quickly made a card for Derek to read at dinner (similar to how I told him a year ago I was expecting Isaac) and left it on his plate.  I thought he would be more suspicious of the situation since I’m not really in the habit of making him cards at dinner but he was taken as much by surprise as I was.  It took a few days for the reality to sink in but we were excited to welcome another little one into our family– even if it was a bit sooner than we had expected.

We decided Isaac should be the one to announce the good news to the world so we bought him a shirt to wear on Mother’s Day.  We told our moms last year on Mother’s Day that Isaac would be joining us and we thought it was an appropriate time to tell our families about baby number two.  (Side note: we are NOT planning on this being a yearly tradition…)

20 Weeks

Things have gone well with this pregnancy.  I haven’t been extremely sick.  Although some days I feel pretty tired, I feel like I have enough energy to function during the day.  My first two doctor’s appointments were normal.  I started showing a bit earlier with this pregnancy but that’s normal for the second time around.  When we went in for our ultrasound on Friday I was 90% sure it would be a girl.  I just felt a lot different with this one and attributed that to a gender difference.  I was wrong.  Doubly wrong.

As Derek mentioned, it took about 2 seconds for the technician to spill the beans and it will take me 2 or more weeks to recover from the shock!  Derek and I joked around when we first found out I was pregnant that maybe it’d be twins.  We didn’t really believe it would happen though.

My dad has several twins on both sides of his family history.  There are twins on both sides of Derek’s family and of course, his mother is a triplet.  I guess our two little guys will fit right in with our families!

It’s kind of overwhelming surprising to think about going from 0 to 3 kids in just one very short year.  But I am so thankful that I can be a mom and that Heavenly Father is trusting us with the opportunity to raise some of His children.  I am positive I will question His judgment from time to time when I’m in the middle of taking care of three babies at once but I’ve learned from previous experience that He is in charge.  He knows what He’s doing.  He knows what’s best and He’ll take care of me.  With that knowledge, we’ll survive somehow and learn a lot along the way!

PS I think Derek is one proud papa to know that he’ll have three little minis following him around everywhere.  I’ve loved watching him turn into a dad and it will be fun to watch him continue to develop this year.  I’m glad I have him to face this adventure with.
